Bigotry coming to town

Louis Farrakhan

As we continue to bask in the elation we feel about President Obama’s support of marriage equality, a Nation of Islam mosque has invited one of the world’s most notorious anti-Semites and homophobes to address America’s Finest City.

Minister Louis Farrakhan is scheduled to speak at the San Diego Convention Center May 27, at the invitation of Minister Hugh Muhammad, a student minister of Farrakhan’s for the last 30 years. Minister Muhammad leads the Nation of Islam mosque in San Diego.

While we all agree with the concept of free speech, it is always challenging when that speech is hate speech. Minister Farrakhan has made numerous anti-Semitic and homophobic statements over the years and the same is expected when he addresses members of the San Diego community.

Here are a few select gems from Minister Farrakhan:

“You think you know Jesus Christ? If you knew him, why is there so much drunkenness, so much drugs, so much fornication, so much adultery, so much homosexuality, so much lesbianism, so much murder, so much crime?

“We see pimps with a cross around their necks. We see hustlers. We see adulterers, fornicators, lesbians, homosexuals. If you can’t preach what Christ says, then get the hell out of the pulpit.”

“… All of a sudden in the night clubs, they started having transvestite shows, drag queens … Scripture says no liar, no adulterer, no effeminate will get in the Kingdom.”

“The Jews don’t like Farrakhan, so they call me Hitler. Well, that’s a good name. Hitler was a very great man.”

“Many of the Jews who owned the homes, the apartments in the black community, we considered them bloodsuckers because they took from our community and built their community but didn’t offer anything back to our community.”

It is so disheartening to be reminded that even with as much progress as has been made in race, religion and LGBT relations, much work remains. I guess there will always be those who think that Jewish people, African Americans, Latinos and LGBT Americans are the other.

Bigotry is universal. It crosses all racial, religious, gender and sexual orientation lines. We can take comfort in the fact that the belief in equality also crosses the same lines. President Obama’s statement supporting marriage equality was one end of the spectrum; unfortunately Minister Farrakhan is the other.

It has been reported that only one thousand tickets to the Farrakahn event have been sold. That’s one thousand too many.

  1. Just because Farrakhan speaks out against the deviant lifestyle of homosexuality, that does mot make him a bigot. Is God a bigot? Check your own abominable selves before you presume to check others.

  2. STAMPP CORBIN must secretly work for the ADL. Minister Farrakhan is not a bigot because he teaches against alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic violence, ignorance and sexual promiscuity among other ills that effect our community. He has been blessed by God with the solution to the problem that plague Black America, which can been witnessed in the people who follow him. Your continued hollow attack on this man is having absolutely no effect.

  3. Funny isn’t it? There is such a thing as gay and lesbian racist you know. Gays and lesbians lie, steal and murder too. They persecute others as well as any tin plate dictator. Take off the victim hat, gays and lesbians are some of the most powerful 1%ers in the world watching the rest of us starve and live under bridges. Listen to Min. Farrakhan like you pleaded with others to listen to you. Don’t deny his humanity to affirm yours. Where are his quotes that affirmed gay and lesbian humanity while maintaining his religious perspective. If I could find them so easily, why can’t you? Or did you even try?
