WASHINGTON , DC – A scathing 42-page confidential document by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) was uncovered yesterday by the Human Rights Campaign as a result of the investigation conducted by the state of Maine Ethics Commission and Attorney General.
The investigation was due to a sworn complaint filed by Fred Karger, founder of Rights Equal Rights (formerly Californians against Hate) on October 1, 2009 against NOM. Karger testified and submitted his complaint before the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices in Augusta. The complaint accused NOM of money laundering in its campaign to pass Amendment 1 one month later.
“I have been tracking the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) for the past four years trying to find out all that they are secretly doing to fight marriage equality throughout the United States,” said Karger. “Thanks to the hard work and extreme dedication of the Maine Ethics Commission and State Attorney General’s office, we are able to get a glimpse into NOM’s evil ways.”
After Karger’s testimony and that of Danielle Avel, the Maine Ethics Commission voted 3 to 2 to investigate the National Organization for Marriage for possible illegal campaign activities. NOM was running and contributed $1.9 million to the Yes on Amendment 1 Campaign to repeal marriage equality in Maine on the November 2009 ballot.
“NOM’s contempt for the law and manipulation of the truth appears to show intent to violate state and possibly federal election laws. I have long and loudly called for a Congressional or U.S. Senate investigation of the National Organization for Marriage. Now it is absolutely necessary,” added Karger. “I hope that the Catholic and Mormon Churches , who have both actively supported the National Organization for Marriage over the past four years, will join me in repudiating their actions and stop any direct funding of NOM, as well as asking their members to do the same.”
since there are no examples mentioned at all, i think we can safely conclude that there is nothing at all embarassing to nom in the document they are so worked up about.
Your argument is similar to saying, “Since it isn’t raining now, it is safe to assume it won’t rain tomorrow.”

It is unlikely that the Maine Ethics Commission and State Attorney General’s office enter into these investigations lightly.
Moreover, NOM is listed as an anti-gay hate group by the SPLC “…based on their propagation of known falsehoods — claims about LGBT people that have been thoroughly discredited by scientific authorities — and repeated, groundless name-calling.”

Robert George, founder of NOM, just was appointed to the US Commission for International Religious Freedom. NOM’s talking points, arguments and strategies come from this man, who calls for the arrest and imprisonment and promoting bigotry of LGBT people. If you believe NOM’s tactics are reprehensible, please take the time to fill out this petition on the White House’s webpage condemning the appointment of Robert George.
