In support of gay art
Dear Editor,
This is in response to the article by Andrew Printer called “More gay art, please!” in the San Diego LGBT Weekly. I am a gay artist and have been living in San Diego for over 10 years. My experience of showing gay–art themed paintings in this city has been more on the negative.
Most restaurants, coffee shops or galleries have always been afraid to show my gay-themed artwork. Most of them are afraid to lose clientele. Even gay patrons have a hard time with it. This I don’t understand since my artwork is really tastefully done.
So after reading your article. I went out and found a restaurant owned by two sweet girls who where not afraid to show the work, and even more embraced it.
The show will be from April 12 to May 13, and meet the artist day is Thursday May 2. The restaurant’s name is Tre Porcellini on University next to Mama Testa.
Now that we have support in showing gay art in Hillcrest it would be great for the gay media to promote such places, and devote a section of their media space for gay artists.
I look forward to receiving a response.
Best regards,
Francois Michel Beausoleil
