Part joke, part reality – either way, the latest protest for same-sex marriage rights have taken a swing into the humorous side of things following an amendment to New Hampshire’s traditional marriage law that would prohibit left-handed people from marrying. The amendment introduced by Seth Cohn (R-Canterbury) pokes fun (and a valid point to lawmakers) at the unfair disadvantage and insensibility gays and lesbians would have to face if same-sex marriage were overturned in the state.

The New Hampshire Statehouse was crowded with protesters Wednesday morning with signage that read, “Two lefts don’t make a right” and “Protect right-handed marriage!”

“I’m using humor to make a point,” Cohn said. “And when I get up there, believe me, there will be a point made. I’m trying to sway people’s opinions and using humor is one way to do it.”

While not every of Cohn’s peers saw the humor in the proposed amendment, State Rep. David Robbins (R-Nashua) jokingly asked Cohn if he was left handed to which the witty Republican replied yes and added, “[Everyone has] an equal right to marry the right-hander of their choice.”

Robbins later said that the matter of same-sex marriage was a serious issue and should not be taken lightly.

Whether or not the jest worked is up to state legislators to decide – either way, New Hampshire ruled to keep same-sex marriage alive in the state after a 211-116 winning vote passed Tuesday.
