Apply for the Young Professionals Council Academy – March 16 Deadline

The Center ‘s Young Professionals Council (YPC) is a program for young professionals, ages 21-40, designed to provide opportunities for conversations with LGBT and allied social justice leaders, networking with like-minded peers and having a great time. The YPC Academy offers leadership training for LGBT and allied equality leaders consisting of six weekend courses, March 31-June 9, 2012. Each course will be a full day of training and discussion focusing on a specific area of leadership development. The Academy encourages participation in a variety of agencies, not-for-profit organizations and government commissions, and will work with graduates to assist them in obtaining placements.

Applicants must be YPC members in good standing.  All that requires is an application, attendance at monthly meetings and participation in the “I Belong” program. Qualified applicants should submit a resume and a 400-word essay on why they would like to participate in this exciting new program to Denise Serrano at dserrano@thecentersd.org by 5 pm Friday, March 16 .

Volunteer! Dine Out! Fight AIDS!

On April 26, more than 100 restaurants, bars, coffeehouses and nightclubs in San Diego will donate 25-100% of the day’s sales to The Center’s HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs! Each year Dining Out for Life® San Diego is a major success thanks to our generous participating restaurants and the dedication of our restaurant Hosts and Ambassadors. Hosts welcome guests to their restaurant, answer questions about Dining Out for Life® San Diego, The Center and the fantastic opportunity drawing. Ambassadors promote their restaurant to everyone they know, with the goal of packing the place! Both are great ways to make an incredible impact! We need volunteers for our street, data, phone, social network, poster, materials and runner teams too…

Library Notes

At The Center, homeless LGBT community members come to us seeking assistance and referrals to community services. The experience of homelessness is chronicled in very personal terms in the book “Travels with Lisbeth: Three Years on the Road and on the Streets” by Lars Eighner. It can be found in the NF-G section of the Center library. The Center’s library contains nearly 7,000 LGBT-related books. It is located in the Community Resource Room and is open for use when the building is open, unless a meeting is scheduled in the room. With ID, borrowers may take up to four items at once for a period of one month.
