The popular geo-social networking app, Grindr, has launched a new initiative that will use their location-based technology to raise awareness about global LGBT issues. The initiative, ‘Grindr for Equality,’ is a social movement that is intended to provide assistance and promote action amongst its some 3 million LGBT members worldwide.
Grindr first began its philanthropy during the repeal of the discriminative “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that was officially implemented on Sept. 20, 2011. Users across the country were greeted with a broadcast welcoming Servicemembers who were still in the closet and providing a link to the Servicemember’s Legal Defense Network’s contribution page. Grindr also used its location-based technology to promote participation in other significant LGBT events including the passage of marriage equality in New York and the overturning of Proposition 8 in California.
Internationally, Grind for Equality promoted a petition denouncing St. Petersburg, Russia’s ban on ‘gay propaganda’ which threatened to silence LGBT community members in Russia’s second most populous city. This action resulted in over 57,000 clicks being sent to the online petition.
“There is strength in numbers and Grindr for Equality will enable users to use our platform for the greater good of our community,” said Joel Simkhai, Founder and CEO.
Grindr for Equality is requesting submissions and information about issues facing the LGBT community. So far they have already received more than 3,700 responses from across the globe. These tips will assist in finding new ways to use their network and geo-targeting technology to mobilize and engage the global LGBT community.
