Excitement among organizers, speakers and participants of the Center for Excellence in School Counseling and Leadership (CESCaL)’s third annual National Educator Conference focused on LBGTQIA youth, this year entitled Supporting Students – Saving Lives, is growing, as evidenced by the recent announcement that Guatam Raghavan, the White House liaison for LGBT issues, will be in attendance at the Feb. 17-19 event, to be held at the Double Tree Hotel in Mission Valley.
In addition to Liaison Guatam Raghavan, other illustrious guests confirmed to appear at the event include out national news anchor Don Lemon from CNN (San Diego LGBT Weekly Sept. 8, 2011, Issue 43), MTV productions chief, Chris Linn and “NOH8” campaign creator Adam Bouska – to name a few.
The purpose of the counseling seminar and educational extravaganza is to teach educators about the unique problems, risks and solutions related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and allied students. Neither, according to Vincent Pompei, conference chair, is the message that “it gets better” lost amid the big names and high production values this year’s conferees will enjoy.
“This conference will bring educators to San Diego from all over the United States and abroad to empower them with the skills necessary to create needed change in their districts,” Pompeii told San Diego LGBT Weekly reporter Ian Stokell late last year (San Diego LGBT Weekly Dec. 15, 2011, Issue 57).
