Same-sex couples who want to get married will unite on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 at 8:00 a.m. in front of the County Administration Building in San Diego to ask for marriage licenses as of annual Freedom to Marry Week.
The annual event comes amid the Ninth Circuit Federal Court of Appeals’ ruling that declared Proposition 8 unconstitutional in California.
“A majority of Americans are now in favor of marriage equality, more and more states are on the verge of granting couples the freedom to marry, yet even with the 9th Circuit’s ruling declaring Prop 8 unconstitutional Californians are still denied their rights. That is why it is so important that we continue to be visible and vocal,” said Marriage Equality USA representative, Fernando Lopez.
“Many a grand judicial decision has been encouraged or enabled by a loud and visible movement of the people. That is why these Valentine’s Day actions are so important,” said SAME member Sean Bohac.
Tomorrow will mark the 12th year in a row that loving, committed same-sex couples have appeared at clerk’s offices across the country to request marriage licenses and to render visible the harm that excluding them from marriage causes them and their families.
