The visual arts scene is officially dead this week. Ghosts and darkness linger where spectacle and thought once lived. All joking aside, there is virtually nothing new happening in the visual arts in San Diego this coming week. It’s the unofficial moment when all the large museums take down one mega show in order to put up the next one (stay tuned for Isaac Julian). In addition it’s the wrong week for all the neighborhood art walks except Ray at Night which I covered last year and last week.
But fear not, your intrepid arts reporter dares to go where others fear to tread, and has found two exhibitions both of which seem to be playing with themes over on the dark side.
The stars have aligned and Subtext Gallery has finally booked Tocayo and Exist1981 in an exhibition titled Dynamic Duo. Using bold, graphic imagery, the ten-year strong collaborative team has created a signature style heavily seasoned by pop culture references. The unstoppable force is sure to bring an action-packed and powerful show to Subtext!
Meanwhile Thumbprint Gallery presents new works by Miguel Angel Godoy and Sonia Lopez-Chavez in an exhibition titled The Dualism of Love. Here’s what they have in store for you: “As humans every thought must pass a dual consciousness; good and evil, black and white, positive and negative, right and wrong, beauty and decay. These are so much a part of our reality that we fail to realize these dualities can cause resistance to what our souls seek the most, love. If we learn to accept dual perceptions we open our lives to love and its own dualism.”
Venture out to La Jolla for their opening reception on Saturday night and prepare to leave a whole new person!
