The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $7.5 million dollars in an effort to promote fair housing laws including protections for the LGBT community. Local and state agencies who have been awarded the funds will be used to promote the Department’s new Equal Access to Housing regulation, a non-discriminatory policy that that ensures all types of housing is made available to all families regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity of marital status.
“Today’s announcement demonstrates the Obama Administration’s commitment to ending housing discrimination, no matter what form it takes,” said John Trasviña, HUD Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. “With these funds, state and local government agencies on the front line of the fight will be able to continue their efforts to take on today’s many fair housing challenges.”
HUD is calling upon local and state agencies to provide requests and suggestions to assist in fair housing enforcement and outreach.
Funds will enable local communities to learn more about fair housing rights including those which protect the LGBT community against unfair housing discrimination.
