Katie O’Malley, wife of Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, says she regrets calling opponents of gay marriage “cowards” in light of the failed marriage equality bill which did not succeed through the state’s legislature last year. O’Malley made the comments Thursday evening in opening statements at the 24th National Conference of LGBT Equality: Creating Change in Baltimore.
“We didn’t expect the things that happened to the House of Delegates to occur, but sadly they did, and there were some cowards that prevented it from passing,” she said.
The remark came in wake of the bill’s failure in the House of Delegates despite its passing in Senate last year.
O’Malley issued a statement Friday, which included an apology, explaining, “I let my feelings get the better of me. I deeply respect that there are strongly held and differing views on marriage equality in Maryland, but hope that our state’s elected officials will come together to fairly address this important issue for our families and children.”
O’Malley currently serves as a judge in Baltimore District Court.
