Former Center board member, benefactor, Dr. Joseph Colombo passes

Dr. Joseph Colombo, a former board member of The San Diego LGBT Community Center and generous benefactor died suddenly Jan. 2, at the age of 57. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Dr. Colombo is survived by his parents, two siblings and many loving family members as well as a vast number of friends, colleagues and mentees.

Renowned for his good heart, quick wit and sharp intellect, Dr. Colombo was a full professor and former chair of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at University of San Diego. Dr. Colombo who was an engaging and popular teacher, served the university in many ways, including expanding horizons at USD by offering classes such as “Gay and Lesbian Voices,” as well as traditional theological topics.

Dr. Colombo served the LGBT community in many ways. He was a mentor to many (including Councilmember Todd Gloria), a generous friend, a pillar of the community and a kind man who was wickedly funny. He shared both his treasure and his time with The Center, serving on the board of directors from 1991 to 1995.

Memorial services will be held at the University of San Diego Friday, Feb. 10 and at The Center Saturday, Feb. 11. Details will be provided by The Center as they become available. Dr. Colombo’s family will be present at both services. Condolence cards may be sent to The Center (PO Box 3357, San Diego, CA 92163) and will be forwarded to his parents.
