A Michigan man is facing charges of intentionally trying to infect over 3,000 men and women with the HIV virus, MSNBC is reporting. The allegations against David Dean Smith, 51, of North Grand Rapids, come in wake of the man’s confession after he turned himself into local police officials Friday.
Health officials have issued a warning amidst the confession to warn “possibly hundreds of people [who] have been exposed to HIV” of their risk of infection.
According to police documents, Smith claims to have slept with “thousands” of men and women, intentionally trying to kill them with the HIV virus, the autoimmune deficiency disease that can lead to the often fatal AIDS virus.
Smith alleges that he found his victims online, often through personal ads. He is currently held on a $100,000 bond at Kent County Jail.
An unidentified and infected victim has come forth to speak about Smith, calling him a “sociopath” and a “predator.” The two met on Yahoo! personals.
“It’s something he should have done years ago,” she said. “He shouldn’t get a pat on the head for what he did.”
The woman says Smith sent her this text message just Friday’s arrest: “Turning myself into the law, my life is over. Take care. Always love you.”
According to hospital records at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, Smith is said to be “sexually aroused by causing pain to females.”
On his Facebook page, a cryptic message was posted just days before turning himself in:
“Someone special to me asked me a question about scandulous people, this was my thought,” he wrote on Nov. 5. “Let me know what ya think. When you are young you believe people will love you like you want and keep an eye out for those scandulous people…as you get older you realize most everyone is scandulous so you dont trust anyone but keep an eye out for the special ones that truley care.”
A day earlier, the following message appeared on his Facebook page:
“I pray for blessings to all I know, for forgiveness for my shortcommings to them and that they may no peace. And last, that I love them all as much as I can.”
