BROKEN HILL, Australia – An Australian lesbian couple whose daughter was originally rejected by a Catholic school because of their sexuality, but then offered a place after the intervention of the diocese bishop, have turned down the offer of enrollment.
Australian Broadcasting News (ABC) reported that the couple who do not want to be identified, say they were shocked and hurt when told their relationship was the reason their daughter’s kindergarten application had been turned down by Sacred Heart Primary School in Broken Hill, New South Wales.
Bishop Kevin Manning had intervened when he heard about the situation. ABC reported Manning as saying, “There’s no way in the world one can penalize a child for what his or her parents do. And in this case, to penalize a five-year-old child because her parents are living in a homosexual relationship is just quite wrong.”
