Deborra-Lee Furness, Hugh Jackman’s wife of 15 years, has described the latest rumors that her husband is gay as “tragic.”
In a recent interview with the New York Post’s Page Six magazine she responded to the rumors that he was gay with the words, “The line I heard was, ‘Wolverine? Who would have thought?’ Hugh and I don’t pay much heed. It’s kind of tragic that these people have nothing better to do than gossip about people they don’t know.”
The couple met in 1991 on the set of the Australian TV show Correlli. Furness played a prison psychologist; Jackman was one of the inmates she counseled.
Furness describes her husband as the sexiest man alive, telling Page Six, “Mind you, I do think he’s the sexiest man alive, and I’d hope every woman would think her husband was.”
Back in 2009 Jackman told Parade magazine, “I’d be happy to go and deny being gay, because I’m not. But by denying it, I’m saying there is something shameful about it, and there isn’t anything shameful. The questions about sexuality I find more in America than anywhere else, because it’s a big hang-up and defines what people think about themselves and others. It’s not a big issue in Australia.”
Jackman, who hosted this year’s Oscars ceremony, won acclaim for his stage portrayal of fellow Australian, gay songwriter and singer Peter Allen, in The Boy From Oz.
