WASHINGTON – HRC has asked to meet with ABC executives to discuss its midseason comedy Work It, featuring two men who dress as women to secure employment. According to ABC, the show centers on two unemployed men who have “learned the hard way that the current recession is more of a ‘man-cession’ and their skills aren’t in high demand. Then the almost-broke Lee finds out that Coreco Pharmaceuticals is looking to hire sales reps – female sales reps. He takes a chance and goes into the interview dressed in heels, a skirt and make-up. The transformed Lee gets hired – as a woman.”
In a letter sent to ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee, HRC President Joe Solmonese requests a meeting to discuss the very real challenges transgender Americans face in the work place – with the goal of ensuring “Work It” can be a light-hearted comedy that doesn’t belittle or mock these obstacles; or reinforce negative and potentially damaging stereotypes.
In his letter, Solmonese reminds Lee about the damage done earlier this fall when FOX News commentator Dr. Keith Ablow spread false rhetoric about transgender Americans when Chaz Bono appeared on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. And many transgender Americans lack basic employment protections – in 34 states, it is perfectly legal to fire someone for adhering to their gender identity.
