Beth Robinson was sworn into Vermont Supreme Court Tuesday and will serve as the first openly gay justice for the state Supreme Court.

Robinson is well-known for her role in passing same-sex marriage rights in the state of Vermont. The landmark case passed in 1999 led to Vermont legislature that would later allow gay and lesbian couples the action to seek benefits once married. The bill was passed in 2000.

She also led Vermont Freedom to Marry which eventually led to the legalization of same-sex marriages in the state.

Gov. Peter Shumlin lauded Robinson for her efforts in achieving LGBT equality in her state.
