Smurfs star Neil Patrick Harris and his partner, actor turned chef David Burtka, have denied they are the perfect role models for a gay couple.
Speaking to E!Online at the recent 40th anniversary gala of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center Harris said, “We’re super happy to lead by example, but even to define ourselves in any kind of leadership position I think is awkward. I cringe when I hear people say they consider themselves role models.”
Burtka agreed, “We really don’t do anything. We take care of our kids. We’re in a relationship. We love each other, but we don’t go out of the way to stand on a soapbox, like Neil said.”
“I sort of go out of my way not to be Soap Box Johnny,” Harris told E!Online
Harris came out in November 2006 saying “… I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love.”
His relationship with Burtka began in 2004. They have twins, Gideon Scott, a boy, and Harper Grace, a girl, who were born Oct. 12, 2010
