Help Father Joe served more than 1.7 million meals in 2011. To help beat that number in 2012, Father Joe’s is hosting a Thanksgiving Day 5K event Thursday, Nov. 24 at 8 a.m. in Balboa Park.

Event T-shirts can be picked up at Spreckels Organ Pavilion Wednesday, Nov. 23 2-6 p.m. or Thanksgiving morning from 6:30-8 a.m.

“Being raised in San Diego, I have watched Father Joe’s Villages do many amazing things for the homeless community,” said Marta Phillips, an event sponsor. “The most remarkable thing about the organization is its approach to helping those in need. It doesn’t just provide food and shelter. It also offers counseling, job training, moral support and guidance to get a person back on their feet.”

Phillips participates in the Thanksgiving Day 5K event for other reasons.

“It doesn’t hurt that the Thanksgiving 5K has, most years, been blessed with San Diego’s signature sunshine.”

Father Joe’s helps provide housing and drug-and-alcohol-treatment to individuals with HIV/AIDS, and the LGBT community, as well as others.
