SAN ANTONIO – A University of Texas San Antonio student, badly assaulted by two men over the Halloween weekend, has claimed that it was solely because she was gay and wants police to treat the assault as a hate crime.
KENS 5, San Antonio reported that Kristen Cooper was waiting for a ride home after a Halloween party when two men at the same party punched her, dragged her into their truck and drove off while allegedly punching her some more.
Cooper told the station, “I’m just still in shock and I’m trying really hard not to cry, but nothing like this should happen to anybody. They (doctors) said I have a concussion, contusion and whiplash.”
Describing the attack Cooper said, “It was bad, it hurt really bad, it was like full fist and I tried to fight them off, but I couldn’t.”
Cooper said the men eventually dropped her off by the side of the road and as she didn’t have a phone she claims she walked along the roadway until someone spotted her and called 911. Cooper said that the men knew she was a lesbian and claims they used anti-homosexual slurs against her during the attack.
“I just think it was a hate crime against me,” said Cooper.
San Antonio police said they are currently investigating the incident as an assault, but can’t confirm at this time if it was truly a hate crime.
