The glitterbombing continues, and this time, it’s Dan Savage under heat after his visit to the University of Oregon Tuesday turned sparkly as a representative from the “Dan Savage Welcoming Committee” rushed to the stage to dump a bucket of glitter on the sex columnist, the Huffington Post reports.
Not all was fun and games: the operative shouted, “Dan Savage is a transphobe!… Glitterbomb courtesy of the Dan Savage Welcoming Committee. He’s a racist and misogynist and a rape-apologist, too!”
Savage visited the university to tape an installment of “Savage U,” an MTV show which will air later this year. Savage has reportedly not fared well with transgender and bisexual people and has allegedly been called transphobic after he made comments about Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna: “It’s staggering that Rob McKenna, a female-to-male transsexual, is making it harder for other FTMs (and MTFs) to access the life saving sex-reassignment surgery that allowed Rob to become the man he is today.” The statement caused somewhat of an uproar since McKenna is not a transgendered person.
Savage has also unpopularly called transgender and transsexual people “shemales,” including one column he titled “Bad Tranny.”
Savage has not yet commented on the glitterbombing incident.
It’s about time that more folks in the LGBT community drew some public attention to this “darling”‘s dark side. He’s done a lot of good work, sure, but he’s made a number of trans-phobic and misogynist statements, hateful, ignorant statements on his bully puppet and doesn’t deserve a rubber stamp. Enlighten yourself, Dan…and I promise you…it gets better.
