A common theme in this week’s political news
Dear Editor,
This week the Log Cabin Republicans of San Diego County made headlines when they boldly endorsed State Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher for Mayor. Surprising many that they would pick a straight ally as opposed to backing openly lesbian Republican District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and openly gay Republican City Councilmember Carl DeMaio.
Today on Thursday October 27th, the newly named San Diego Democrats for Equality (Formerly the San Diego Democratic Club) unsurprisingly endorsed Congressman Bob Filner for mayor.
What is most significant is that on both sides of the aisle LGBT political organizations have endorsed straight allies as opposed to members of their own community to take the city’s top job. Proving once and for all that in San Diego being LGBT doesn’t guarantee the LGBT vote.
I actually went to the San Diego Democrats for Equality meeting, the only Republican in the room, just to observe and I noticed another underlying commonality after conversations with leaders from both sides of the LGBT aisle. There is an underlying bipartisan theme: Anybody but Carl DeMaio!
Respectfully submitted,
