Due in part to her effort to support LGBT teens, Cathleen Galgiani (D) has confirmed to The Stockton Record that she is a lesbian. Galgiani hopes her open sexuality will send a positive message to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teens that it’s okay to be homosexual.

“It sickens me that young people would think about taking their lives because of who they are,” said Galgiani. The California Assemblymember says she knew she was gay after she was elected into the 17th Assembly District in 2006.

“We applaud Assemblywoman Galgiani for her bravery and honesty.  She joins an esteemed group of gay and lesbian California lawmakers who have worked tirelessly for their constituents and for LGBT Californians across the state,” said Victory Fund’s Chuck Wolfe.

Galigani is a supporter of the FAIR Act, also known as SB 48, which was prompted after the suicide of Adam Wood, a gay teen just outside of Merced – a place close to home for Assemblymember Galigani.

“We have seen problems of bullying across the nation,” Galgiani said in a statement to The Stockton Record. “It’s my way of saying to (gay people) that they have value; you have things you should look forward to. They’re our kids. It hurts me to think about the young gay person who takes their life because of who they are.”
