Today marks the celebrated Spirit Day, where millions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and allies come together in celebration of supporting LGBT youth and the stand against bullying. Those in participation of Spirit Day wear purple to symbolize the special day.
“From Hollywood to corporate America to local grassroots advocates, Americans are taking a stand against bullying this Spirit Day and showing all LGBT teens that it’s okay to be who you are,” said GLAAD President Mike Thompson.
Hundreds of celebrities have joined forces to celebrate the day, including Tyra Banks, Ellen DeGeneres, Conan O’Brien, and Wendy Williams who will wear purple today as they are featured on national TV shows including on Access Hollywood, CNBC, E! Online, Good Morning America, MSNBC, Noticiero Telemundo, The Talk, and The View.
Joining them in celebration include Cher, Chaz Bono, Mia Farrow, Heather Graham, Gloria Allred, Lukas Haas, Audra McDonald, Ricky Martin, Joel McHale, Julianne Moore, Suze Orman, Sara Ramirez, Joan Rivers, Paulina Rubio, Tori Spelling, and stars of the WWE will join cast members of TeenNick’s Degrassi as well as Pauley D, Sammi Giancola and Vinny Guadagnino of MTV’s Jersey Shore and Farrah Abraham, Tyler Baltierra, Maci Bookout and Catelynn Lowell of Teen Mom.
The National Basketball Association, MTV, Sundance Channel, Jewish Home Life Channel, AT&T, Verizon, Facebook, Hewlett-Packard, NBC Universal, Pepsi and a slew of other companies will also participate in the day’s celebration.
