Officials at the San Diego Democratic Club (SDDC) announced that they have changed the 35-year-old organization’s name to “San Diego Democrats for Equality.”
SDDC, an affiliate of National Stonewall Democrats, was founded in 1975 and is the largest club chartered with the Democratic Party in San Diego County. SDDC’s mission is to secure for all gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people the equal human rights guaranteed to all citizens by the Constitution of the United States, to foster the ideals of the Democratic Party and to contribute to the Party’s growth and influence.
Doug Case, president of San Diego Democrats for Equality stated, “We have been discussing the desirability of adopting a name that better reflects our LGBT roots. The overwhelming vote for change at our September meeting was the culmination of a nearly six month process that included polling the membership and the community as well as a great deal of soul searching about the roots and goals of the club. Our new non-generic name signals that we are an issue-oriented club that supports equal rights for everyone, including those in the LGBT community. Additionally, the name makes it clear that we invite supportive allies to be part of our cause. Our new name gives us an opportunity for a fresh start and an opportunity to re-introduce ourselves to the community – and to invite new members to join our campaign for social justice.”
The Club is conducting a contest to select a new logo. Designs must reflect the new name and mission of the club and should be original and not similar to that of any other, non-affiliated organization. Designs can be submitted to info@democratsforequality.org no later than Nov. 21.
The winning design will be announced at the club’s Holiday Party in December and the winner will receive a one year individual Patron Membership ($500 value).
