Open transgender bodybuilder to compete

Chris Tina Bruce

San Diego’s own transgender bodybuilder and fitness guru, Chris Tina Bruce, will return to the bodybuilding stage Oct. 29 at the Scottish Rite Center, 1895 Camino del Rio South in San Diego.

Bruce says that, “like Chaz Bono on Dancing with the Stars,” her goal is to demonstrate equality. She will be the first openly transgender bodybuilding competitor to compete as her gender of orientation. She will also be the first bodybuilding competitor to have competed both as a male and then female.

As a man, Bruce was 6 feet, 1 inch tall, and weighed 250 pounds. As a woman, Bruce has trimmed her weight to 185 pounds.

Asked by a local media outlet whether she has a competitive advantage over lifelong females, Bruce was circumspect:

“I’m just out there to compete. I don’t look at (having begun life as a man) as an advantage or a disadvantage. Unless you’re in a national competition, there’s no drug testing. I’ve been on testosterone blockers for three years. Some of these genetic women competitors have been taking male testosterone for 10 years.”

  1. York Barbell is reinventing itself. They’re a huge supporter of GLBT bodybuilding. How great to have a name like York Barbell behind us!
