A self-proclaimed medical marijuana activist threatened to jump from a University Avenue bridge Friday, Oct. 14, in protest to District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis’ policies on enforcing anti-sales laws, but was arrested without injuries after seven-hour standoff.
Officers are closed a portion of SR 163 and diverted traffic in and around the area, causing delays that rippled throught the region during the Friday evening commute.
According to local ABC affiliate, KGTV, the man had a bag of some sort at his side and was wearing all black. His presence on the outside of the bridge’s concrete side barrier was first reported to police at 3:45 p.m. However, according to KGTV, traffic alerts were issued far earlier, at 2:23 p.m.
Speaking to LGBT-community business leaders and others about her mayoral campaign Monday, Dumanis told San Diego LGBT Weekly there were things she could do as mayor in regard to the city’s medical marijuana policy that she cannot do now as the region’s top law enforcement officer – and that her position on the issue is not as conservative as people think.
Specific charges regarding the man’s arrest have not been announced.
