Equality California, the state’s largest gay rights group, announced Wednesday it would not lead a ballot campaign to overturn Proposition 8 – a discriminatory law that prohibits same-sex marriages due to a constitutional amendment that limits marriage to that between a man and woman.
The reason for the fallout is described as a divided vote and court challenge to overturn the ruling, the Washington Post reports.
“Given what we know about public opinion and the significant challenges of the current political and economic climate, Equality California will not lead an effort to return to the ballot in 2012 to overturn Proposition 8,” explained ECQA executive director Roland Palencia.
As a part of their shift in priorities, Equality California will aim to allocate resources to public awareness for gay parenting in the upcoming year.
