Art happenings around the city

September was designated “Arts Month” in San Diego, but October is National Arts and Humanities Month. That means America’s Finest City gets 61 days of creative events and activities to keep us entertained.

Here’s a list of a few things happening around the city in the coming week:

Fall for the Arts: Dozens of arts and cultural organizations will be on hand presenting performances, workshops, demonstrations, food and exhibits to kick off National Arts and Humanities Month, on Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier. Join the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, the Port of San Diego and The San Diego Foundation for this fun, free event on the Big Bay and get a preview of the exciting fall season of arts and culture in San Diego. thebigbay.com/fall-for-the-arts.

Photo Auction: Head over to the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) in Balboa Park on the night of Wednesday, Oct. 5 to help celebrate their inaugural Photo Auction with cocktails and canapés from some of San Diego’s hottest restaurants, including Bencotto, George’s at the Cove and Alchemy. This is your chance to acquire work from some of the best and the brightest in photography. All proceeds from Photo Auction 2011 directly support the museum’s mission to share and spread visual art. Fashion at the Timken: The Timken Museum’s annual fashion show invites fashion students to create original designs inspired by works in the museum’s permanent collection. Although the $100 preview has come and gone the exhibition remains up until Oct. 1 so catch it while you can. timkenmuseum.org.

Local crafts: Mark your calendars for Oct. 6 from 8 p.m. – midnight. Mercado Golondrina has confirmed over 30 vendors, artists and musicians for a night of shopping from San Diego’s talented artists, artisans and crafters.
