Suspect in attempted rape arraigned in hospital bed

Bail has been set at $500,000 for a 53-year-old man who was charged with attempted murder during an attempted rape of an acquaintance at knifepoint in a camper in Hillcrest.

Kenneth John Bauer pleaded not guilty Sept. 15 to all charges, which also include assault with a deadly weapon and assault with intent to commit forcible sodomy upon a 28-year-old man in a Sept. 11 incident.

The victim was stabbed in the chest, back and hands and was taken to a hospital, said Deputy District Attorney Ana De Santiago. Bauer also stabbed himself in the stomach and was arraigned in his hospital bed at Scripps Mercy Hospital.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Desiree Bruce-Lyle went to the hospital and he was arraigned with a deputy public defender and the prosecutor present, records say. Bauer has been discharged from the hospital and is now in the central jail.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. in the 2900 block of Fifth Avenue in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego.

De Santiago said both the victim and Bauer knew each other. The victim was able to run away after being stabbed and called police.

Police officers went to the camper, but Bauer, who was still inside, refused to surrender for several hours. He wasn’t wearing clothing when police initially talked to him, according to documents. Police used pepper spray and a dog to get him to surrender. Bauer allegedly attacked the dog before he was arrested. However, the dog wasn’t injured.

A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 28.

  1. Offenders can just do anything they want and that is why us, parents, should be vigilant at all times. We must make sure that our kids are safe in and out of school. So I though of looking up for safety apps and luckily I read one about a safety app which gets me connected to a safety network or escalate my call to the nearest 911 when needed with just a click, it has other cool features that are helpful for your kids. Check it here: http://www.tsue-thatswhatshesaid.com/2011/09/keeping-your-child-safe-supporting.html

  2. Not all the facts have been reported. You can not judge until you know all the facts. There is more to this story than what is in this article.
