VIDEO: Soldier tells dad he is gay after the demise of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

San Diego LGBT Weekly

San Diego LGBT WeeklyUsing the pseudonym “AreYouSurprised,” Randy Phillips, 21, gained over 98,000 subscribers and 2 million views on his YouTube videos which counted down the last days of the military’s discriminatory Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) policy. But on his 17th video, Phillips was finally able to do what he’s always wanted to do – come out to the world after being “100 percent closeted,” MSN reports.

And as a part of his coming out, Phillips had decided to call his father to share the big news. Sitting in an office chair in front of a world map, Phillips calls his dad in Alabama and tells him that he is gay.

“Can I tell you something? Will you love me, period? You’ll always love me?… Dad, I’m gay. Always have been — have known since forever… I don’t know when’s the next time I would be able to see you. I didn’t want to do it over the phone. I wanted to tell you in person, but uh … I didn’t want you to find out in any other way,” Phillips says.

Finally – relief – his Dad replies “OK.”

“Do you still love me?”

“Yes, I still love you, son.”

Through the emotion of muffled words, Phillips’ dad is heard saying words of comfort like “doesn’t change our relationship” and “I will always love you.”
