The Rolling Stone reported Thursday that Cyndi Lauper, beloved rockstar and esteemed LGBT ally, has set plans to open a new housing facility that will accommodate homeless youth within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in New York City. The groundbreaking facility will celebrate its ribbon cutting at its Manhattan location; West 154th Street, near Frederick Douglass Boulevard in New York’s Harlem neighborhood.

Appropriately named “The True Colors Residence,” the facility will aim to provide food, shelter, and comfortable living quarters for LGBT homeless youth in New York City. Lauper was motivated to pursue the project since nearly 40 percent of homeless youth identify themselves as LGBT.

“These young people often face discrimination and at times physical assault in some of the very places they have to go for help,” Lauper wrote in a letter seeking funds for the project. “This is shocking and inexcusable!”

The True Colors Residence will break ground on September 1st.
