The New York Post released a new report Monday that indicated a notable surge in the number of marriage applications filed in New York City as a result of the newly-enacted Marriage Equality Act. The report suggested that nearly 1,400 gay couples have tied the knot since the law entered effect, which represents one-fourth of all marriages performed in the city.
According to the Atlantic Wire, city officials were unable to determine the exact number of marriage licenses submitted by gay couples as applicants are no longer required to specify gender. However, the city was able to collect enough data to conclude that New York saw a 33 percent increase in the number of marriage applications submitted from the same period last year.
Since the gay marriage law entered force, 5,597 marriage licenses have been granted in New York.
Although the city admits it to be nearly impossible to calculate the precise number of gay marriages performed in the past month, they recognize the increased demand for marriage and attribute the surge to the legalization of same-sex marriage.
