The San Diego Redistricting Commission plans to approve a new map by next week. Two public meetings remain.
Using federal census data, the Redistricting Commission has to modify city council districts every ten years to adjust for population changes. This year, the city is also adding a 9th district, in accordance of the new strong mayor format approved by the voters last year.
The last two public meetings are Aug. 18 and Aug. 25. The public is invited to provide additional input while the commission deliberates on further adjustments before voting on its final plan Aug. 25. The final plan requires five aye votes out of the seven-member Commission.
Residents may review the most recent map under consideration online at sandiego.gov/redistricting or may request materials in alternate formats by calling 619-533-3060.
The public meetings are at 4 p.m. in City Hall (202 C Street in downtown), in the City Council Chambers, 12th floor.
Since the creation of the LGBT-friendly district after the 1980 census, San Diego voters have always elected a gay or lesbian city councilmember.
