Multicultural event celebrates diversity

On Saturday Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. the San Diego LGBT Community Center will be holding The Multicultural Explosion: A Celebration of Diversity, which they hope to make an annual event.

While event information may list Charles Patmon Jr. as who to contact about the event he himself admits it really wasn’t his idea.

The Multicultural Explosion is (really) the brainchild of Carolina Ramos,” Patmon Jr. said in an email interview. “And Urban Pride San Diego is assisting her in its execution.”

Ramos heads Latino Services at the Center and recently spearheaded the Frida event a month ago. She feels that this particular event will be fun and beneficial to everyone involved.

“The LGBT communities of color have been talking about this for a while,” Ramos said. “We felt that it was important to have an event that highlighted the richness of our cultures and come together to celebrate our diversity.”

It was in 2010 during the Black and Brown Summit that Ramos actually came up with the idea to have this annual event.

The Black and Brown Summit was an opportunity between African American and Latino LGBT organizations, communities and leaders for potential collaboration in strengthening these communities’ voices for upcoming political elections.

The event being presented came out of that meeting and all parties involved hope there is a good turnout as it promises to have many things for all to enjoy. There will be workshops, on-site screenings and even a fashion show.

“(The) fashion show will feature our ethnicity,” added Ramos. “And the variety of clothing worn by our cultures. It’s going to be full of color and style.”

There will also be entertainment in the form of several local entertainers, singers and dancers and they have also hired DJ Melo Rican.

According to Ramos they also plan on having a beer garden and local food vendors with “delicious traditional foods.”
