As I learned during San Diego’s recent Pride weekend, the Art of Pride continues on throughout the year with a new exhibition of art every month and a reception at San Diego’s Pride offices on the second Saturday of the month, coinciding with North Park’s Ray at Night festivities.
This month Art of Pride showcases the work of native San Diegan, Professor Maryann Luera along with photographer Tim Fisher.
Maryann Luera has been painting for over 20 years. Her body of work involves a broad array of subject matter, each set of images offering the viewer a unique perspective on established themes. Luera’s idealized paintings of the male figure for example, present a view of men that uses them as metaphors for sexual and social duality.
Meanwhile, Luera’s exploration of Mexican imagery and iconography offers a fresh look at Mexican culture. In her Day of the Dead paintings, assemblage pieces and collages she expresses a love and respect for her Mexican ancestry providing the viewer a new perspective on a familiar culture and traditions.
Tim Fisher’s photography is an explosion of vivid and surreal digital techniques. Landscapes, plants, animals and the male nude are all equal subjects of his collage-like investigations, many with nods to iconic artists such as Andy Warhol and Richard Avedon.
Hung together Luera and Fisher’s art promises to be a very colorful event indeed.
This joint exhibition can be seen at the San Diego Pride offices at 3620 30th St. in North Park. Meet the artists as well as other members of Art of Pride on Aug. 13 at a reception from 6 to 9 p.m.
