Gay Men’s Chorus performs with San Diego Symphony

Broadway veterans Christiane Noll, Doug LaBrecque and Debbie Gravitte perform with the SDGMC and the San Diego Symphony.

San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus (SDGMC) performs with the San Diego Symphony in Broadway’s Tony Winners, part of this year’s Summer Pops series. The concerts are Friday, Aug. 5, and Saturday, Aug. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Embarcadero Marina Park South.

“Recognizing the high-performance quality offered by gay men’s choruses across the country, SDGMC proudly joins the ranks of sister choruses in Atlanta and Minneapolis that have been featured guests on their cities’ symphony pops concerts,” said SDGMC Artistic Director Gary Holt. “We are confident that the San Diego Symphony chose SDGMC for its high musical standards and commitment to artistic excellence but we also suspect that they know no one knows Broadway show tunes like a gaggle of gay men!”

Due to space limitations, Holt says he has to select 60 singers of the 145-member chorus to perform with Summer Pops. “These singers were selected based primarily on their longevity with SDGMC,” Holt said, “most of whom have performed in five or more concerts with the chorus.”

Tony-winner Debbie Gravitte, Tony-nominated Christiane Noll and one of Broadway’s most magnetic leading men, Doug LaBrecque, will also join the chorus members. Some of the Broadway hits performed by chorus members will include “One” (A Chorus Line), “Circle of Life” (The Lion King), “Luck Be A Lady” (Guys and Dolls) and “I Am What I Am” (La Cage Aux Folles).
