On behalf of President Obama, Press Secretary Jay Carney announced today that the White House stands behind efforts to instate the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill designed to repeal DOMA on grounds of unconstitutional discrimination. The seminal legislation will be the subject of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing tomorrow in Washington, D.C.
With regard to the bill, Carney explained that the president is “proud to support” anti-discrimination efforts that “would take DOMA off the books once and for all.”
In response to Carney’s announcement, HRC President Joe Solmonese spoke on behalf of his organization in thanking the president for his support.
“By supporting this legislation,” Solmonese explained, “the President continues to demonstrate his commitment to ending federal discrimination against tens of thousands of lawfully married same-sex couples.”
Solmonese is among those scheduled to testify on behalf of The Respect for Marriage Act during tomorrow’s hearing. Check back for updates as we continue to cover legislative progress regarding DOMA repeal.
