Rudy Giuliani tells GOP: “get the heck out of people’s bedrooms”

Former New York governor and prominent conservative Rudy Giuliani told CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday that, while his personal views stand in opposition to New York’s recent legalization of gay marriage, he believes that the GOP should avoid becoming embroiled in the issue and focus instead on matters of fiscal policy.

“I think the Republican Party would be well advised to get the heck out of people’s bedrooms and let these things get decided by the states,” Giuliani explained. He added that, especially in tough economic times, a dedication to the party’s “economic, conservative roots” would serve the GOP better than what he suggested may be a losing battle against marriage equality.

Giuliani has long been on record as a supporter of civil unions. When pressed by reporters to speak to gay marriage, the possible 2012 presidential candidate explained, “I think it’s wrong;” however, he added that “there are other things that I think are wrong that get decided by democratic vote,” and that he sees “more harm” incurred by “dwelling so much on this subject of gays and lesbians and whether it’s right or wrong in politics.”
