Long-time gay/Latino activist Nicole Murray Ramirez has been honored with two prestigious LGBT Pride awards.
The first honor was presented on the floor of the California State Assembly in Sacramento during the third annual “LGBT Pride Celebration” held in the state capitol. Gov. Jerry Brown officially recognized the celebration and Murray Ramirez was honored along with six other LGBT Californians as “Persons of the Year” by the Speaker of the State Assembly John Perez, and the Majority Whip of the State Assembly Toni Atkins and the LGBT caucus made up of state senators and state assemblymembers at the State Assembly Chambers.
“All of us stand on Mr. Murray Ramirez’s shoulders,” said Atkins. “As evidence of how far we have come, there are seven LGBT members of the California Legislature and three viable LGBT candidates for mayor in San Diego. Marriage equality and the end of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell are in sight. Without Nicole’s tireless and trailblazing work, we could not have come so far.”
This year marks the inauguration of recognizing Pride month in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego by KPBS and Union Bank. Murray Ramirez and Dr. Delores Jacobs, CEO of the San Diego LGBT Community Center, became the first LGBT San Diegans to be honored.
“I am sincerely honored by these award recognitions and hope to continue my work for both the gay and Latino communities which I love so very much,” Murray Ramirez said.
