The San Diego City Council has voted 7-0 to pay $498,320 in architectural fees and engineering designs for a new fire station in Hillcrest to replace the current old building that is too cramped to fit new fire apparatus inside.
The Hillcrest Fire Station No. 5, at 3902 Ninth Ave., will be demolished and replaced with a modern building designed by architect Rob Quigley, who designed the new main library which is under construction.
A city resident, Jarvis Ross, told the council on June 14 they should not use Quigley because of his work on the library.
“There are fire station plans all over the country. We don’t have to re-design something that is quite available,” said Ross. “These architects don’t consult with people who use the buildings.”
The Hillcrest fire station was built in 1961. The Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee forwarded the proposed cost to the council on May 11.
