In a televised interview Wednesday on “Piers Morgan Tonight,” superstar and Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron claimed that marriage is not a priority in her own personal relationships. However, when it comes to same-sex marriage, Theron believes that anyone who values the institution of marriage should have the option to wed.
Recent efforts on behalf of New York gay marriage and the “It Gets Better” campaign have brought many celebrities out of the woodwork in favor of marriage equality. But Theron took her advocacy one step further. The Los Angeles Times reports that, back in 2009, the actress (then involved in a long-term relationship with actor Stuart Townsend) swore never to marry until same-sex marriage was legal; and although the couple have since split, Theron remains adamant about same-sex marriage rights – as well as her own convictions regarding the marriage ceremony.
“The actual ceremony is not something that’s important to me,” Theron told Piers. “I really want for myself a long-term relationship…that’s the kind of union that I want.”
