Nicole Murray Ramirez, a long time San Diego Latino and LGBT rights activist, has been named the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender person of the year by city Assemblymember Toni Atkins.
Atkins explained that San Diego’s LGBT community has relied upon Nicole Murray Ramirez over the years and noted the city’s progress by pointing out this year’s record LGBT representation in civic government.
“There are seven LGBT members of the California Legislature and 3 viable LGBT candidates for mayor of San Diego,” Atkins said, adding that both gay marriage and the long-awaited repeal of DADT lie ever nearer on the statewide and national horizons as well.
“Without Nicole’s tireless and trailblazing work,” Atkins concluded, “we could not have come so far.”
Murray Ramirez, who currently serves as a San Diego City Commissioner, national board member of the Harvey Milk Foundation, International Court Council chairman, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force board member and distinguished contributor to LGBT Weekly, received recognition at a special ceremony today at the State Capitol in honor of his distinction as the LGBT person of the year for the 76th Assembly District.
Over the course of his 45 year career as an activist and LGBT community leader, Murray Ramirez has maintained staunch local roots working with the last five mayors of San Diego while also serving a variety of statewide and national organizations including the Human Rights Campaign, the National Latino/a Lesbian and Gay Organization (LLEGO), Equality California and Stonewall 25. In addition, Murray Ramirez is the sole gay activist nationwide to have been selected to sit on all four national boards of the Washington D.C. LGBT marches.
