More than 100,000 people have declared their support for marriage equality in an open letter to President Obama moderated by Freedom to Marry’s ‘I Do’ campaign. Now, Oscar winner Natalie Portman and her fiancé, Benjamin Millepied, have added their names to the star-studded list.
Freedom to Marry launched the open-letter campaign in March with the goal of making marriage a reality for same-sex couples throughout the country. Evan Wolfson, who serves as president of the organization, tells E! Online that “we know that victory will ultimately come from persuading either Congress or the Supreme Court to end marriage discrimination” – a challenge that will require marriage equality in a “critical mass” of states and support from a strong majority of the U.S. population.
Celebrity same-sex marriage advocates across the board have already come out in support of the ‘I Do’ campaign. In addition to Portman and Millepied, other LGBT stars and allies standing behind Freedom to Marry include Lily Tomlin, LeAnn Rimes, Jane Lynch, Anne Hathaway, Martin Sheen, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia DeRossi and Melissa Etheridge.
