San Diego queer scientists, engineers start a new QuEST

While many would assume there is considerable support for the LGBT community in high tech companies, others contend that not enough is being done to support openly gay scientists and engineers.

To address the issue, a new organization called QuEST – Queer Engineers, Scientists and Technical Professionals of San Diego – is holding its second event June 2 at Surfside at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, a beach house in La Jolla Shores, 6-10 p.m.

The group brings together scientists, engineers, professionals, professors, post-doctoral and graduate students from local bio-tech and technology companies and universities, in a forum intended for networking and socializing.

QuEST’s Devin Sok says that the organization is a community for scientists and all those who support the cause, and is intended for people active in the sciences and engineering at all levels.

While the inaugural social gathering in April garnered extensive support with some 50 attendees, mainly from the La Jolla and Torrey Pines areas, the group is also trying to reach out to the broader local community.

In addition to expanding its membership, QuEST also has other future plans. According to Sok, the group has already secured a booth for the upcoming San Diego Pride Festival.

The June 2 event is 6-10 p.m. at the SIO’s Surfside at 8622 Kennel Way. For info, log on to sdquest.us.
