Nevada prohibits employment discrimination

NEVADA – Nevada’s Republican Governor Brian Sandoval has signed the Transgender Employment Protection bill (AB 211) into law, prohibiting employment discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression.

Nevada is now the 14th U.S. state, along with the District of Columbia, to provide protections based on gender identity or expression.

“It is wrong to discriminate against people for characteristics that harm no one else and that are a legitimate expression of their sense of self,” said Sen. David Parks (D-Las Vegas), according to Las Vegas Review-Journal. “It is harmful to society to deprive such individuals of the ability to earn a living, find housing, to use stores, restaurants and other facilities and live free of fear.”

Additionally, the Nevada legislature has passed SB 331 and 368, bills that expand the state’s anti-discrimination laws in the areas of public accommodations and housing, respectively. SB 331 protects against discrimination in public accommodations on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, while SB 368 adds gender identity to Nevada’s housing anti- discrimination law.
