The Gay Men’s Spiritual Retreat (GMSR) has served the spiritual needs of the San Diego gay community for 20 years. This year, the organization’s annual retreat will take place June 10-12 at Camp Stevens in Julian, CA and provide attendees with a sober, supportive environment of fellowship, workshops, drug and alcohol rehabilitation and recreation.
The GMSR is designed to improve the spiritual lives of gay men without adherence to any sectarian or denominational creed. The group defines “spirituality” as “the sum of the non-physical attributes which define how a person lives his life,” and offers activities intended to help gay men examine and enhance their spiritual lives in a judgment-free, safe and sober atmosphere.
The theme of this year’s retreat is Hō’ ala, a Hawaiian term that means rebirth. Participants will spend three days in Camp Stevens’ tranquil, remote location and take part in activities ranging from yoga and meditation to hiking, swimming and archery to the GMSR’s annual drag show, as well as fellowship with fellow participants and optional counseling services.
The GMSR welcomes all gay men who wish to get in touch with their spirituality in a sober environment.
