Gay fashion icon Tom Ford adapted Christopher Isherwood’s novel of the same name for his first film, and Colin Firth was nominated for an Oscar for playing the gay professor who tries to find happiness after his lover dies.
Unfairly criticized for being too much about the 1960s art direction, the film is more than that: it’s a haunting meditation on love, grace and beauty. Julianne Moore plays the professor’s drunken best friend in one of the best performances of her career, which is really saying something.
