The New York Times reports today that veteran journalist Frank Bruni will become the first openly gay op-ed columnist in the illustrious paper’s 160-year history.
Bruni, who has contributed to the Times for decades and served as chief restaurant critic for over five years, will be writing a new column in the paper’s Sunday op-ed pages that will turn a “sharp and opinionated” eye on weekly events. Opinion editor Andrew M. Rosenthal believes that the column “will fast become a destination for our readers with Frank at the keyboard.”
“I’m excited and really grateful,” said Bruni upon learning of the new column assignment. Bruni added that he appreciates the diverse range of topics his work at The Times has permitted him to cover in the past, and hopes that the op-ed column will allow him to “range across most or all of them in a reflective, analytical and sometimes – I hope – spirited way.”
Prior to his latest assignment, Bruni wrote for the New York Times Magazine. He first joined the New York Times in 1995 after a stint at The Detroit Free Press. Bruni was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and is the author of “Ambling into History” and “Born Round,” both of which have reached the New York Times best sellers list.
