Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of New York, is the latest in a string of high-profile personalities, celebrities and politicians to release a video message advocating in favor of gay marriage.
The New York Times reports that the video shows Cuomo urging his fellow New Yorkers to support legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage if passed by the State Legislature.
In the video message, Cuomo says that legalizing gay marriage “is a matter of fairness and equality:”
“It is not a question of religion or culture, but a question of legal rights and government policy,” the Governor added.
Cuomo encourages New Yorkers to rally for what he terms the “next chapter” of the state’s long-standing support of civil rights – and thanks to his endorsement, many gay rights advocates believe that victory is in sight. Cuomo’s popularity with voters just might inspire the conversions necessary to pass same-sex marriage through the State Senate. But with the legislative session ending in a mere four weeks, New York gay marriage supporters still have ample campaigning to do before they can rest assured of a legislative majority.
